STAPLED RECTAL RESECTION

STARR Procedure

Stapled Transanal Rectal Resection - removes redundant rectal tissue causing outlet obstruction through the anal canal, providing structural correction for ODS and chronic constipation caused by internal intussusception.

What is STARR Procedure?

The STARR Procedure (Stapled Transanal Rectal Resection) uses two circular staplers introduced through the anal canal to perform a full-thickness resection of the anterior and posterior walls of the lower rectum - removing the redundant rectal tissue (internal intussusception, rectocele) that causes outlet obstruction. Dr. Samhitha Reddy performs the STARR Procedure at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad for carefully selected patients with obstructive defecation syndrome (ODS) or severe outlet-obstruction constipation. As part of the best doctor for constipation in Hyderabad programme, STARR is offered after biofeedback therapy has not achieved adequate improvement and defecography confirms a structural cause - specifically internal intussusception or significant rectocele.

STARR is not appropriate for functional ODS (pelvic floor muscle dysfunction) - biofeedback is the correct treatment for this. STARR is indicated only for structural ODS (internal intussusception, rectocele) confirmed by defecography and failing biofeedback. Patient selection is critical.

How the Procedure Works

1

Defecography Confirmation

Defecography confirms significant internal intussusception or rectocele contributing to ODS. Anorectal manometry excludes pelvic floor muscle dysfunction as the primary cause.

2

Two-Stapler Technique

Two PPH-03 staplers are introduced transanally. The first fires anteriorly, the second posteriorly - together performing a circumferential full-thickness resection of the lower rectum.

3

Redundant Tissue Removal

The redundant anterior wall (rectocele component) and posterior wall (intussusception component) are captured within the stapler and resected simultaneously.

4

Staple Line Assessment

The staple lines are carefully inspected for haemostasis and integrity. Any bleeding points are suture-ligated.

5

Recovery

Hospital stay 1 day. High-fibre diet and stool softeners prescribed. Follow-up at 6 weeks to confirm functional improvement.

Who Needs This Treatment?

  • No abdominal incision - entirely transanal approach
  • Directly removes the structural tissue causing outlet obstruction
  • Addresses both anterior (rectocele) and posterior (intussusception) components
  • 1-day hospital stay - rapid recovery
  • Suitable for carefully selected patients with confirmed structural ODS
  • Available at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad for selected ODS and constipation cases
"

STARR is a precision procedure for a specific problem - structural outlet obstruction. When selected correctly, it removes exactly the tissue that is blocking defecation and restores function remarkably. The key is rigorous pre-operative selection to ensure the patient has structural, not functional, obstruction.
