Polypectomy
Standard removal of pedunculated or small sessile polyps from the anal canal or rectum - performed endoscopically or via office proctoscopy. All specimens examined histologically to exclude malignancy. Available at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad.
What is Polypectomy?
Polypectomy is the removal of a polyp from the anal canal or rectum. Pedunculated polyps (with a stalk) are removed by snaring the stalk with electrocautery energy. Small sessile polyps (flat base) are removed by cold snare or biopsy forceps. All removed tissue is sent for histological examination to determine polyp type and confirm complete excision. Dr. Samhitha Reddy performs polypectomy at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad as a day-care procedure during flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. As one of the best polypectomy doctors in Hyderabad, she provides a comprehensive surveillance plan based on the histological result - ensuring early detection of any dysplastic change and prevention of colorectal cancer.
How the Procedure Works
Endoscopic Assessment
Flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy maps polyp location, size, and morphology - confirming suitability for standard polypectomy.
Snare Placement
The electrocautery snare is placed around the polyp stalk (pedunculated) or around the base of a sessile polyp. The snare is tightened to the correct position.
Electrocautery Application
Blended or coagulation current is applied through the snare - simultaneously cutting and coagulating the polyp base to prevent bleeding.
Retrieval
The removed polyp is retrieved using a net or suction for histological examination. The resection site is inspected for complete removal and haemostasis.
Surveillance Planning
Based on histological result (hyperplastic, adenomatous, serrated), Dr. Samhitha plans surveillance colonoscopy intervals per national guidelines.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Minimally invasive - performed through the endoscope without external incisions
- →Day-care procedure with immediate recovery - same-day discharge
- →All specimens sent for histology - early detection of dysplasia or malignancy
- →Prevents progression of adenomatous polyps to colorectal cancer
- →Multiple polyps treated in a single session
- →Comprehensive post-polypectomy surveillance programme at Lux Hospitals, Hyderabad
Polypectomy is one of the most important preventive interventions in gastroenterology - removing an adenomatous polyp today prevents a colorectal cancer in 5-10 years. Every polyp removed is a future cancer that never happened.
